Ralph Boschung picks up points on racing return in Baku

Ralph Boschung displayed solid pace on his return to racing after a recent neck injury, coming through the field to score two points in Sunday’s Feature Race in Baku.

Starting 18th for Saturday’s Sprint Race, Ralph was able to carve his way through the field with some great overtakes, moving as high as ninth during the 21-lap event, before an incident on the final lap saw him drop out of the top-10.

Despite experiencing significant neck pain before and during the race, Ralph once again showed great speed on Sunday. He was able to use a mid-race Safety Car to his advantage, pitting on Lap 18 to re-join in 11th. A clean second half of the race for the Swiss driver rewarded him with a ninth-place finish and two points in the capital city of Azerbaijan.

FIA Formula 2 now heads to the historic Silverstone Circuit for Round 7 on 1-3 July.

Ralph Boschung: “Overall, it’s been a good weekend, and I’m delighted to return after my recent injury. The circuit in Baku is great fun to drive, it’s one where you can make mistakes easily. I was hoping for a strong result in qualifying, but the late red flag meant there was a lot of traffic on my final run. I knew we had the speed to move up the grid during the two races, and I enjoyed fighting back through the field.

“We decided to try something different during the Feature Race and pit under the first Safety Car, hoping we could get to the end on the alternate strategy. The gamble paid off in the final few laps, I managed the tyres well and was able to pick up a few more places to finish ninth, which I’m really pleased about considering I had some pain in my neck again throughout the race. I’m looking forward to returning to Silverstone and I’ll be aiming to score more points.”
